CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Design of electrical and electronic devices, circuits, and systems by the application of the engineering sciences, economics, and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or other national standards

COURSE COORDINATOR: Prem Kumar

COURSE OBJECTIVE: To provide capstone design experience in Electrical Engineering. In the next offering of the course, the design projects will be in the area of optics and photonics technology, including fiber-optics.

PREREQUISITES: Senior/graduate standing or with permission of the instructor.

SOME EXAMPLE PROJECTS:

  • Design and build a fiber-optic amplifier
  • Design and build an optical diode
  • iii) Design and build an optical feedback loop
  • iv) Design a fiber-optic transmitter

Actual project list will be finalized during the 1 st week of classes

COMPUTER USAGE: Use of MATLAB, Mathematica, PSPICE, and other software packages

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: Weekly project update summaries

GRADES: 50% based on design report, 50% based on prototype implementation

COURSE OUTCOMES: When a student completes this course, s/he should be able to:

  • undertake design projects in the field of electrical engineering
  • have an understanding of the role of standards in engineering design
  • implement sound safety practices in electrical engineering design
  • have a keen awareness of environmental issues in electrical engineering design
  • construct prototypes based on their designed specifications
