MEET THE FACULTY: Jorge Nocedal4:00 p.m May 27, 2009 Ford ITW Auditorium
Jorge Nocedal, Professor, EECS Department, Director of the Computational Science Institute, "Nonlinear Optimization Applications in Image Processing, Machine Learning and Energy Modeling" | Abstract: Numerical optimization is a research area that straddles three disciplines: computer science, operations research, applied math. I will briefly talk about the mathematical foundations of nonlinear optimization and how they influence algorithmic design and modeling techniques. The main part of the talk will focus on three application areas in which optimization is playing a vital role and that are central to EECS: image processing through compressive sensing, machine learning algorithms, and strategic bidding models (Stackelberg games) in electricity markets. I will attempt to demonstrate how the mathematical,
software and modeling activities in this discipline form a cohesive and rich research area.
Bio:
Jorge Nocedal joined Northwestern in 1983 and holds a joint appointment in the IEMS department. Prior to joining Northwestern, he taught at the Courant Institute in New York. His research interests are in optimization and scientific computing, and in their application in a variety of scientific and engineering fields. In 1994, he co-founded the Optimization Technology Center, and in 2001, Ziena Optimization Inc, a company devoted to optimization software. He was appointed Bette and Neison Harris Professor of Teaching Excellence in 1998. Jorge Nocedal is in the ISI Highly Cited list (mathematics category). Visit Jorge Nocedal's website |
