FAQ for EECS Undergraduate Teaching Labs

The EECS Undergraduate Teaching labs are equipped with state-of-the-art electronics for course specific student use. The labs are stocked with electronic components, test leads, probes, soldering + desoldering irons, equipment manuals and some hand tools for the assigned lab. Two labs are also available for EECS students working on special projects. See details below.

Where do I get a lab kit?
For certain labs like 203, 225 and 307, pre-packaged parts kits are required. We also have an "Elenco TK-1500" tool kit available for student purchase at $40.00. It includes hand tools, soldering and desoldering tools plus a DMM.

How do I pay the kit fee?
All fees for parts kits and tool kits are paid by check in the main EECS office (L359) made out to "Northwestern University." A receipt is then issued. Bring it to Albert Lyerla (CG20-24) or Norm Flasch (MG12) and you will receive your kit. Fees are stated in class.

Can I use the labs outside of my regular lab session?
We provide lab space, test equipment and common electronic components for students working on special EECS related projects. Two rooms are well equipped for this purpose. CG10 and the north side of CG30 (south side is for EECS 203). You are welcome to use these rooms OUTSIDE OF FORMAL LAB SESSIONS. Those sessions will be posted on the doors. These labs will be open during normal business hours 8:30-5:00.

What if I want to work in a lab after normal business hours?
Half of MG22 is now designated 24/7 access for students working on special projects. Entry will be by swiping your Wildcard. The room will be stocked with common electronic components, test equipment, leads, soldering and desoldering irons. There are 3 PC's in the room for net access and there is a device programmer.

Where do I get special parts?
Students who are working on projects that require special parts are encouraged to purchase them from companies like Jameco, MCMinone, Digi-key and Mouser. They all have excellent online catalogues. We'll leave printed versions in the labs as well. Albert Lyerla also has an excellent selection of IC's and other components in CG24. See Albert or Norm Flasch for assistance. Also, if you feel that there is a common part(s) that we do not stock let us know so that we can add these to our inventory.

I am a TA and need a key to the lab.
Keys for undergraduate teaching labs (MG18, CG10, CG30 and CG50 are issued to TA's currently teaching in those labs at no cost. See Carol Surma in L359 to check out a key.

MG22 is now open 24/7, and is accessible by swiping your EECS-enabled Wildcard at any hour, seven days a week. More about this lab at this link.

What else do I need to know?
Another important feature of our teaching labs are the PCs. All of our labs have networked PCs. All but MG22 have networked printers. When using our lab PCs remember to save your work to an external memory device. Every night all user files are wiped clean and default system setting restored.
