PREREQUISITES BY TOPIC: Understanding of telecommunication services, i.e., utilities of telephones, voice mail, television, videoconferences, cable systems, shared databases, faxes, computer games, e-mail, etc. Knowledge of mathematics at the calculus level will also be required.

REQUIRED TEXT: William Stallings and Richard Van Slyke, Business Data Communication , Macmillan College Publishing, 3rd edition.


COURSE Goals: To prepare students to understand fundamental concepts, the present state, and the prevailing trends in telecommunication technologies.


Weeks 1 and 2: 
Introduction and Overview. 
Course overview, information coding, transmission of information, networking, multimedia requirements (includes requirements for presentation, transmission and storage of voice, sound, pictures, video, and data), basics of computer systems as it relates to multimedia, abstraction tools required to describe systems and networks, systems architecture, and needs for standards.
Read Chapters 1, 2, and 3.

Weeks 3, 4, and 5:
Telecommunication Fundamentals 
Fundamentals of signal transmission, telecommunication techniques, analog and digital transmission of signals in space and in wave guides, capabilities of twisted-pairs, coaxial cable, fiber optics, microwave, satellite, and other radio waves, basic concepts of networking and switching such as packets, multiplexing and virtual circuits. 
Read Chapters 4, 5, and 6.

Week 6
Case Study
Review of the Northwestern University Network, the Chicago Metropolitan Research Network, and the Internet2 network initiatives.

Weeks 7, 8, and 9
Networking and Networking Products and Services 
Voice and video networks as they are operated by telecommunication companies today, the important role that TDM has played for a quarter of a century in shaping the present telecommunication services, data networking including local area, wide area, and Internet technologies and products, Ethernet, FDDI, Token Ring, TCP/IP, X.25, ISDN, emerging new network technologies, and products such as Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode, wireless telecommunication and Broadband ISDN. 
Read Chapters 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
