11/16/2009 — Office of STEM Education Partnerships at NU seeks Web Developer

Are you a web developer interested in joining a small team to build software and websites that have the potential to be used in classrooms all over the world? The Office of STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Education Partnerships (OSEP) at Northwestern University is looking for a web developer to join us full-time or part-time to contribute to our educational web and software projects. The developer will work specifically on the iLabs Network www.osep.northwestern.edu/projects/ilabs/) and GLOBE Watershed Dynamics (www.osep.northwestern.edu/projects/GLOBE/) projects. Qualifications:

· Experience in building web-mapping applications (GIS, GPS) and content management system Drupal is highly desired
· Proven capability to learn new things quickly and adapt to new or changing project requirements
· Must have an enthusiasm and a willingness to be part of a diverse team that works in a flexible and dynamic environment.
· An interest in applying technology in educational contexts is a plus

Dr. Anita Borg (1949-2003) devoted her life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling the barriers that keep women and minorities from entering the computing and technology fields. In honor of Anita's vision, Google is proud to announce the 2010 Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, awarding a group of female students a $10,000 scholarship, for the 2010-2011 academic year. The Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) is a ten week summer research opportunity for undergraduate Juniors & Seniors, and Graduate students, under the guidance of a mentor, at a participating Navy Laboratory (list of participating universities is available at http://www.asee.org/nreip). The stipend amounts for the program are $7500 for undergraduate students and $10,000 for graduate students. U.S. citizenship required; Permanent residents accepted at certain labs.

We are seeking an experienced Computer Engineer to plan and lead projects involving multi-disciplinary research studies of modal and intermodal aviation and other transportation safety issues.

By applying advanced knowledge of computer engineering to the evaluation and design of aviation safety management systems, including risk management and aviation safety assurance programs, you will create innovative approaches for the architecture and integration of systems for the FAA and other Division clients, and expand capabilities, applications and customer bases. As a recognized technical authority, you will explore new techniques to effectively utilize advances in computer science to develop new operational concepts to support the overall system integration and performance of a portfolio of aviation safety management and assurance systems, by developing simulations/models including designing, documenting, writing/programming, and testing the resulting software design.

Qualifications:
You must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, (or be a registered engineer). In addition, you must have at least one year of professional engineering experience which included managing, supervising, leading, and/or performing professional engineering and scientific work involving the design, construction, and operation of computer systems, including hardware and software and their integration, for applications related to transportation , particularly the area of aviation safety.

This experience must have involved defining projects and parameters and coordinating the technical work of project teams, and must have demonstrated creativity and innovation in enhancing technical content while providing best value.

JOB DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a capable and responsible systems administrator for the Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling (CCL) http://ccl.northwestern.edu/.

The main component of the job is Unix (Linux) systems administrator: Maintaining the CCL's 3 Linux servers and associated services and technologies including backups. This includes maintaining mailing lists and aliases (Postfix and Mailman), Apache servers, and a code repository (utilizing SVN and Trac).

In addition to these responsibilities, the administrator will be responsible for troubleshooting CCL Macintosh and PCs when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with UNIX system administration preferred, but the position is also open to proficient UNIX users with a strong desire to learn UNIX system administration and the ability to learn quickly. Some light programming (Python, Perl shell scripting, etc.) may be involved. Knowledge of Mac and Windows platforms and an eagerness to learn and solve problems. Experience with hardware configuration is also required.

PAY RATE: Range is $11-15/hr depending on experience.

HOURS: 8 hrs/week minimum (if you want more hours than that, we can support up to 20 hrs/week).

Post-Doc: Forensic research positions are currently available in Dr. Kent Kiehl’s laboratory at The Mind Research Network and the Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico (open until filled). All candidates should possess strong interest, and preferably experience, working with incarcerated populations. Duties include working with a research team on several grant funded studies examining the cognitive and neural systems underlying adolescent and adult psychopathy, substance abuse, and related illnesses. Write papers based on collected data from grant funded studies (topics flexible) and submit applications for independent grant funding. Hires will learn to assess psychopathy via clinical interviews, perform neuropsychological testing and DSM-IV structured interviews, and assist with preparation of grants, ethics/IRB proposals, and manuscripts. Qualified hires will also receive training in brain imaging (event-related potentials (ERP) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)) data collection and analyses. Position will include access to the MRN Mobile Imaging System that is deployed to local prisons (adolescent and adult male/female facilities).
