The text is C.-T. Chen, Linear System Theory and Design, third edition, Oxford, 1999. I will cover Chapters 1-6, with some omissions, and hopefully part of Chapter 7.
Schedule of exams:
Mid-quarter exam Wednesday Oct. 28.
Final Exam Monday Dec. 7, 7-9 PM.
The exams will be open book, open notes. A file of old exams will be put on reserve in the library.
For the purpose of taking the exams it is strongly recommended that you have a calculator capable of doing basic matrix algebra, linear equations solution, and eigenvalues/eigenvectors determination.
Use of Matlab or any comparable software package (Mathematica, Mathcad, Maple etc.) is not permitted in the exams. Likewise, laptop computers, or any other platforms capable of running such packages, are not permitted.
Use of symbolic math software is not permitted on exams. For example, if you are asked to determine a transfer function C(sI-A)-1B + D then I want to see some work and not just the answer.
Because the Fall quarter is followed by a long holiday break, many students travel after the quarter ends. Sometimes a student asks to be allowed to take the Final Exam earlier than scheduled, in order to leave earlier (many professors would like to do likewise). I will not grant this sort of request. If the official published exam schedule is unsatisfactory for you, then do not take the course.
