Brief Biography
Alok Choudhary is the chair and John G. Searle Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a Professor of at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He is the founding director of the Center for Ultra-scale Computing and Information Security (CUCIS) which involves several schools, National Labs and universities. He is the academic director of the Executive Program on "Managing Customer Relationships for Profit" in the Kellogg School of Management's executive education program, and is a member of the Center for Genetic Medicine.
Professor Choudhary is a fellow of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), fellow of the ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) and a fellow of the AAAS (American Academy of Advancement of Science).
Prof. Choudhary was a co-founder and VP of Technology of Accelchip Inc., in 2000, which was eventually acquired by Xilinx. In addition to being responsible for technology, he also raised finances from VCs and customers. He also serves or has served on the Board or Technical Advisory Board of several companies.
From 1989 to 1996, Dr. Choudhary was on the faculty of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Syracuse University, where he received the prestigious National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1993. He has also received an IEEE Engineering Foundation award, an IBM Faculty Development award, an Intel Research Council award, and in 2004. In 2006 he received the first award for "Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service" from the McCormick School of Engineering.
His research interests are in high-performance computing, data intensive computing, scalable data mining, computer architecture, high-performance I/O systems and software and their applications in many domains including information processing (e.g., data mining, CRM, BI) and scientific computing (e.g., scientific discoveries). Furthermore, his interests lie in the design and evaluation of architectures and software systems (from system software such as runtime systems to compilers), high-performance servers, high-performance databases and input-output and software protection and security. His research is currently supported by DOE, DARPA, NSF, AFOSR, Chicago Biomedical Consortium, Intel and IBMIn these areas Dr. Choudhary has published more than 300 papers in various journals and conferences. He has also written a book and several book chapters on the above topics. Alok serves on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Systems, and the International Journal of High Performance Computing and Networking.
Alok received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1989, an M.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1986, and his B.E. (Hons.) degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India in 1982.
Prof. Choudhary is a Member of the National Academy of Science's committee on "Impact of High-End Computing on Sciences", which was formed on behalf of the Office of Science of the U. S. government and various federal agencies. The goal of this committee is identify critical areas of HEC for solving most important scientific problems.
