For students in my courses: In my lectures I generally code in Python, currently version 3.9. You can download the installation package for your own machine here. Mark Pilgrim's Dive into Python 3 tutorial is an excellent learning resource.
For projects or courses involving circuit design and analysis, I'm currently using Analog Devices/Linear Technology LTspice. You can download the package here.
For projects or courses involving VHDL or Verilog, e.g. for FPGA design, I'm currently using Intel/Altera Quartus Prime (Lite Edition) v16.1 which is free and includes Modelsim. You can download the package here. The online book "FPGA's for Dummies" (2'nd Intel Special Edition) is also free and well-matched to the Quartus Prime toolset.
